The animal kingdom was established billions of years ago and is continuously growing, and many animals have come and gone since its conception. Calculating the exact number of animals that have ever lived on Earth is impossible, however, an educated guess can be made.
Using data from fossil records, scientists have been able to determine that animal life first appeared on Earth around 540 million years ago, and has since evolved immensely. It is estimated that around 17 million species are currently living on our planet, and this figure is only growing as new species are discovered and new species evolve.
There have been many mass extinction events throughout Earth’s history, and this has caused a lot of species to go extinct. However, these events have also opened up many new opportunities for new species to thrive, and this has resulted in a continuously increasing number of species. For example, the extinction of dinosaurs allowed for the evolution of mammals.
Due to the complexity of life and the fact that so many factors contribute to the evolution of animals, there is no definitive answer to this question. However, considering the sheer number of animals that have lived since the inception of Earth and the vast number of animals that are currently living on Earth, it is safe to say that many animals have existed throughout Earth’s history.
